DR CR OOSTHUIZEN

Dr CR Oosthuizen, orthopaedic surgeon, matriculated in 1973 after which he enrolled at the University of Stellenbosch for his MBChB, with which he graduated in 1979. He obtained his M.Med (Orthopaedic) degree in 1989 at the University of Pretoria.

He began a private practice in 1990 at Garden City Clinic and at Life Flora Hospital. He moved his private practice to Life Wilgeheuwel Hospital in 1996.

Dr Oosthuizen specializes in Arthroplasty of knees and hips and spinal procedures. He has a special interest in Unicompartmental Knee Arthroplasty (UKA) and the research surrounding that.

Dr Oosthuizen has published numerous journal articles both nationally and internationally as well as having also published a book, The UKA, which is referred to in “The UKA Book” section.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF UKA?

The UKA is a minimally invasive option for patients whose arthritis is isolated to either the medial or the lateral compartment. The procedure offers several benefits for patients with a moderately active lifestyle, who have arthritis in only one knee compartment and who are within normal weight ranges.

UNIQ

The UniQ is a newly developed implant of the Unicompartmental Knee Replacement (UKR) concept that improves the longevity of the implants by solving the complications that occur with the conventional implants.

The implant is available in a cemented and cementless version for different needs in knee pathology and has been tested for wear at the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR).

THE KNEE OSTEOARTHRITIS GRADING SYSTEM (KOGS)

The Knee Osteoarthritis Grading System (KOGS) was developed to improve the identification of a suitable prosthesis. The procedure cannot be implemented without a clinical assessment or the informed consent of the patient.

KOGS is a dynamic, validated, radiological tool used to identify the degenerative process and can be seen in The Journal of Arthroplasty (2019;34:450-455). The system evaluates all three compartments to identify the focal lesion suitable for a UKA and is initiated by a bone-on-bone assessment according to the Kellgren and Lawrence scale.
